  1. All of the story elements in speak make it a piece of young adult literature. The main characters name is Melinda Sordino and she is a 14 year old girl who is starting 9th grade. The plot talks a lot about the normal struggles and events that occur in a young adult's life. The mood in the novel is a very dark and sad because throughout most of the story it talks about how bad Melinda struggles to make friends or show up to school. The main conflict in the story is Melinda's conflict with Andy Evans, her rapist, or her internal thoughts. Because of Melinda's sexual abuse her mental health is not good at all, she even rarely will ever talk to anybody the entire story. The main theme is to stick up for yourself and tell someone if anything is wrong. I think it also helps young girls know that they are strong and that they can say no when boys ask to do things they don't want to do.

  2. Through out the entirety of the novel speak is a piece of young adult literature. The main character is Melinda and she is just starting 9th grade, the story goes throughout her freshman year of high school and talks about her struggles. Her main struggle in her freshman year is her mental health that was caused by her rape from Andy Evans. Melinda does not want to make friends or even talk to anyone. She does not want to come out of her room at all or keep her grades up. This demonstrates a real life occurrence for young adults and what one may go through, meaning mental health. Melinda will not speak up about what happened until she was trying to protect her old best friend and became a new person the day she told Rachel. I believe this is the theme, that things should be talked about, it okay to reach out for help when your struggling, and keeping things in during a hard time in your life will boil up. The main conflict in the novel is her getting past what Andy Evans had done to her and in the end she finally gets herself back and stands up against him. Lastly, the thing I will remember most about this story is when Melinda stood up for herself in the closet an d her finally speaking to Rachel again.

  3. The elements presented in the book Speak all help represent the book as a piece of young adult literature. To illustrate, the main character Melinda Sordino is a freshman girl attending Merryweather high school. The plot focuses on Melinda's struggles and overcoming her fear to speak. As well as, accepting help and friendship after being rapped. The mood of this novel is very sad and depressing because most of the story talks about Melinda feeling like she has no friends, support, or even a purpose in life. The main conflict for Melinda is Andy Evans. Andy is her rapist and is the cause that leaves Melinda with the inability to speak; leaving her with disconnections from her family and social life. The main themes of this novel are to speak up for yourself and don't be afraid to ask for help when it is needed. The thing that intrigued me the most was when Rachelle dumped Andy at prom, because I didn't think she would listen to anything Melinda told her but she must have came to her senses. I will remember the impact Melinda's teacher Mr. freeman had on her, because I had a teacher make a big impact on my life as well.

  4. All of the elements in the book Shout makes it young adult literature. The book Shout is slightly different than the book Speak. Shout still talks about the hardships Laurie went threw in high school but also includes details about how she grew up, her process of writing Speak and her other books, and her getting the courage to travel the world and talk about what she went threw. The main theme of the book Shout is don't be afraid to speak up for yourself because when you speak up for yourself you can help others around you too that are going threw the same thing. The thing that intrigued me most about the book Shout was being able to almost watch the author grow and work threw her trauma. The thing that I will remember most from this book is Laurie's courage. For so many years she was so scared to speak up about what happened to her. But when she finally did it change her life in the best way possible.

  5. Speak is definitely considered a young adult literature because the main character is 14 and has to face the struggles that come with being in high school. Melinda who is the main character has had a traumatic summer going into her freshman year, and that makes her freshman year a struggle for her. All of these elements make me know this is a young adult book. What I will remember most about this book will be how one teacher can make a big impact on who you are as a person. For Melinda that person was Mr. Freeman. She had someone that she could turn to and rely on when things got rough. I think that would be the main point of the story to always be kind because someone could be relying on you.

  6. Speak is considered a young adult literature book because it include all the story elements that young readers would like to read. The book is about a Melinda who is a 14 year old girl, who faced a tragic trauma the summer before freshman year in high school. After experiencing this traumatic experience it makes her start of her freshman year struggling by everyone knowing that she called the cops on the party and she is struggling to make friends and fitting in especially when she misses school a lot. All of the story elements are included in this book because it's what makes the book a young adult literature book for teenagers to read. When reading the book the main theme that I caught while reading the book is don't be afraid to speak up for yourself even if you made the biggest mistake in your life and everyone hates you and won't talk to you. Don't let people bring you down because you made a big mistake but speak up when something traumatic happened to you. The thing in the book that surprised me in the book is when Racheal broke up with Andy at prom. Throughout that entire chapter I thought that Racheal would not believe a word that Melinda said until Racheal came to her senses by believing Melinda about what Andy did to her. The most important thing that I will remember about this book is that certain people in your life can change your life and make you become the person that you are supposed to be. That one person can make you speak again and bring you out of your safety place.

  7. I think that speak one of the reasons speak is considered a young adult novel is since, the character was a teenager in high school and she was pretty relatable and going from her day to day high school life was something that most teenagers relate to easily like the similarity of the days. It talks about the struggles a young high schooler may face and what to do when faced with those problems or struggles. The conflict I thought was very important for a young adult book since it deals with things like rape, depression not fitting in and speaking up, in doing this the author shows the readers always to speak up for what you believe in no matter how hard it is. That is a powerful message for a teenager or really anyone to know or to see in a book. What intrigued me most was Mel's relationships with other people at first she was very closed off and reserved but throughout the book she became more open and able to speak her mind and express her feelings which I though was very cool. I think what I will remember the most about this book is when Mel she gets confronted by Andy and as he is trying to rape or hurt her again she screams and fights and I think it is amazing how she speaks up for herself and changes her life for the better, since she gains confidence, friendships and a whole lot more.

  8. The character, setting, and conflict make this book young adult. Melinda is going into high school and dealing with the aftermath of her sexual assault. Young adult books often have characters navigating their way through high school. Also, the conflict of Melinda not being well liked and feeling depressed is very common in other young adult books. The thing that intrigued me most about this book was how people changed throughout the story. Melinda for example started speaking more and stood up for herself when Heather tried to come back into her life. Another example is Rachel not believing Melinda and being rude to her but then breaking up with Andy. The thing I will remember most about this book is the ending. It shows how others can be the one to speak up and be there for you.
