Do you believe in 100 years, this novel will be considered a "classic"?  Will it stand the test of time and be something that students will be reading in an English class of the future?  Why or why not?

  1. I do not think speak will end up being a classic for few different reasons. The biggest reason I do not think it will become a classic is because there is already a major classic all around the world that has to do with sexual abuse and that is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I just think since a major classic already has a focus around rape that it wouldn't need another one. Also, speak was at most points just a book about a girls everyday life in high school, it never really talks about her struggles with the sexual abuse until the very last 10 pages, so it can get a little boring at times. I think speak is great book for middle schoolers, just to spread awareness on the subject. It would help show them they need to be careful and that high school can be very hard mentally and physically.

  2. i do not think that speak will end up as a classic for a couple reasons. I think that this book should be read for girls specifically in middle school as it talks about the hardships of high school and how you can get through things like this. I don't really think it will become a classic because it was not really a great read and is not like the classics we have right now. This book was good but it was not great to become a classic. It was a fast read that was easy also and most classics are much harder reads.

  3. No I don't think this book would be considered a classic in 100 years. Mostly because the learning point about sexual abuse in this novel is not really a large part of the book. And yes, the struggles of being a teenager in high school is something that is good for children to read, but not important enough to be read in a high school English class. In exception, I do think this book would potentially be a good read for an English class for middle schoolers. I think this because it can teach them some important lessons prior to entering high school and this book would be their reading level as well.

  4. I do not believe that Speak will be considered a classic in 100 years. Speak was a very fast read and had a good storyline, but I don't think it was thought out enough to be a classic. Speak has been around since 1999 and has had some publicity but not as much as a good classic novel should get. There are a lot of other books out there that have been published around that time and are still getting constant positive feedback. I believe that Speak was a very good awareness book and it has a lot of good messages in it to speak up when something is difficult, but I think for this to be a classic it would have to be more developed and go to a deeper meaning into her thoughts and show me as a reader how she got over her tough situations.

  5. I do not think Shout will be a classic is 100 years. I do think it was a good read and would be very educational for girls in middle or high school because it talks about how bad Laurie struggled in high school and how much a sexual assault can affect someone. I don't think it would be a classic because it feels more like a memoir and you kind of have to read Speak before for Shout to make sense. Maybe Speak would be a better option for a classic because it is like her main story and tells more about what she went threw rather than how she grew up and like a timeline of her whole life.

  6. I do not believe this book will become a classic in 100 years. Overall was a decent book that was short, relevant to society today and spread awareness and overall had a very powerful message. However I don't think that it will become a classic even though the main topic is very important for people to understand and learn about how horrible rape is and how it can affect someone and what to do about it. I think if the book where to give you more information on what had happened to Mel and how it affects her day to day life instead of you not knowing why she was withdrawn from everybody it would make more sense. Also if the book went more into the topic more having Mel expressing her thoughts and feelings and how she wanted to speak out about getting raped it would be better developed. I could see something like this book being a classic that has the same subject line to express the importance of speaking out even when its hard like, the book All the fighting parts or what kind of girl those have the same overall theme as speak but displayed in a better way so the things like rape or sexual abuse was talked about more in the books and how the characters struggled to find a new normal and talk and speak up about there experiences.

  7. I don't believe that Speak will become a classic in 100 years. Speak was an okay book that had a deep message that young girls face in today world and that it has a powerful message to send to girls that it's okay to speak out after a trauma that you faced. I don't think that this book will become a classic book that young readers will pick up because there are a lot more writers starting to write that will write the same topic as Speak and they would prefer that book over Speak. I think that if the author started the book off the night that Melinda got attacked and followed through on how was then able to speak up for herself and telling people then I believe that the book would then become a classic but the book is set up as her going through her freshman year in high school from start to finish and her at the end of the year speaking up to what actually happened to her that night at the party. I can see another book like this as a classic but I do not see this book becoming a classic. I believe that Speak send a powerful message that young girls could relate to and it spreads awareness for girls that can relate to the topic.

  8. while I wouldn't choose this book to be a classic that isn't really my place to say. What I will say is this book has potential to be. First, why it might not be a classic, this book may not become a classic due to it not being very timeless. I say this almost as soon as I started reading this. people just don't act like this anymore, and it's just really hard to relate to in my opinion, but that is really the only reason it wouldn't become a classic. I think this book would become a classic due to the fact that it has a very good message. it shows that there are people that get overlooked by society and that are depressed with no one to talk to or be friends with. from my experience many books that are considered classics are ones that have messages in them and make you think. the second reason why this book would become a classic is due to the large number of symbolisms that are present in this book. for this reason and the one before it I think this book has a higher chance of becoming a classic than it does not.

  9. In 100 years, I do not think this book will be considered a classic. I think that this Speak won't be a classic because it discusses the same topics as many other contemporary books. The topic of this book is extremely important which is why so many other books have the same message. Also, this book didn't really stand out compared to other books I have read. Speak was a book that could get slow at times and was just talking about her daily life. For those reasons, I do not think Speak will be a classic in 100 years.
