What story elements (character, plot, mood, conflict, theme, etc.) are present in this book to make it "young adult"? What intrigued you the most about this book? What will you remember most about this book?
Speak represents young adult literature because the main character is in high school and she is around the age of 14-15. Throughout the book it also talks about many common problems that young adults struggle with, like grades, friends, being in activities, dating and more! This novel represents contemporary literature because it talks about Melinda's struggle with sexual abuse and her experience at a party when she is raped by a fellow high school boy Andy Evans.
ReplyDeleteThe book Speak is a good example of a young adult book because of the characters ages and the challenges Melinda had to face in the book. Melinda is a freshman in high school when a traumatic event happened to her that made her realize that the world isn't all good. In high school a lot can change and this book shows you how to overcome challenges. This represents contemporary literature today by showing readers that challenges are ok and it's what you do to help yourself that makes a difference. Every high schooler goes through difficult times and this book reminds you that its ok and to focus on the positives.
ReplyDeleteI think this can be defined as a contemporary young adult book because the things that Melinda is going through applies to things young adults could have happen to them. It also talks about problems that occur in todays world . Melinda goes to a party and is rape and this can bring awareness to young adults in our society today.
ReplyDeleteSpeak makes for an accurate example of an contemporary young adult book because of the main character Melinda. Melinda is a freshman girl, navigating what its like to be in high school for the first time. Not only is she dealing with social problems and family dynamics but is also a rape victim; which are all things that may apply to other young adults. This novel is a good representation of contemporary literature today, because it leaves the message that its okay to speak up for yourself, especially if you are hurt or in trouble. And that is something that has been brought to our societies attention, but there is always need for more reminders.

I think that it could be an example because the main time in the authors life that she struggled was when she was a young girl. So I think that the book could be a good example for young girls that are going threw something similar and help them cope.
ReplyDeleteI would think that this is a good example of young adult since it represents some struggles of a teenage girl, it shows the problems and good things that happened to Mel that could be realistic for anyone today. It represents young adult literature today since it is relevant to the times, has relatable characters and situations. I think it is also a good example of a young adult book cause it deals with some intense topics that teenagers can be suffering with like, depression, being a victim of rape, social problems and overcoming and facing those challenges and adversaries. With these problems and struggles it also shows you to cope with the challenges which is a reason it is a good example of a young adult book.
ReplyDeleteI think that Speak is a good example of a young adult literature book because it represents struggles that teenage girls face through high school and as a teenager. Being a teenager and going through high school can result in some problems and struggles that they can face. Melinda faced problems and struggles before she even started high school and the problems kept growing through her freshman year of high school. Speak represents a young adult literature book because there are a lot of books that talk about rape victims and how they stay silent about it and then when they have the trust from someone else they finally speak up about what happened to them. This book is a good example of being a young adult literature book because it deal with problems that teenagers today face and suffer which includes being a rape victim, speaking out, and social problems and also overcoming their fears of getting help. With teenagers struggling with these problems it shows how some teenagers cope with the challenge and the problem which is the reason why Speak is a good example of a young adult literature book.
ReplyDeleteWhat makes this book such a good example of Y.A.L is because it isn't afraid of doing new things and sacrificing readability to do so. I think this book was written for two reasons, one reason is to spread awareness. This would allow more people to connect to the book through struggles that they face in them. This is what I think a young adult lit book is all about. It's to connect to a younger audience and relate to them, and I think this is what this book does very well. What I think this book says about modern Y.A.L is that they are very much about the internal struggles of the youth. I think this book does a very good job at letting people know that people struggle and something that they go through is not physical but rather mental.

It talks about her experience in high school and how she deals with being disliked. Addressing these topics makes it a good example of contemporary literature.
